A chess set is a great gift when it suits the person getting it. The most common gift mistake is buying something beautiful that’s awkward to actually play on. Start with who it’s for.

For a child who’s just learning

Buy what their club or school uses: a roll-up vinyl board with 2.25” squares and weighted plastic Staunton pieces. It’s inexpensive, it survives being dropped, and it’s what they’ll see at their first tournament. A set that includes a bag feels like a “real” kit to a kid.

Skip themed character sets for a beginner. Unusual piece shapes make it harder to learn which piece is which.

For a family or casual player

A folding wooden set with storage inside is the classic. Look for squares of at least 1.75” and pieces that feel weighted; the very cheapest sets have tiny, light pieces that get knocked over.

For someone who plays at a club

They probably own a vinyl tournament set already. What they’ll appreciate is the upgrade: a wooden board with 2.25” squares and weighted wooden Staunton pieces with a 3.75”–4” king, or a digital chess clock if they don’t have one.

For someone who mostly plays online

An electronic board lets them play their online games on a physical board. Check that it connects to the site they actually use before you buy.

For a collector or a “statement” gift

A luxury Staunton set in rosewood or ebony, or a hand-carved themed set. Read our woods guide first so the label matches the price.

For travel

A magnetic folding set with 1”–1.5” squares, so pieces stay put on a train or plane.

Five checks before you buy

  1. Square size and king base match. About 75–80%. See our size guide.
  2. Weighted pieces. They feel better and fall over less.
  3. Felt on the bases. Protects the board and quiets play.
  4. Spare queens. A nice touch on better sets.
  5. Delivery time. Many wooden sets ship from overseas. For holiday gifts, order a few weeks early and check the seller’s estimate.
